Make Your Own Wellness Shots
My husband and I start almost every day with a wellness shot. Determined to not spend an arm and a leg on something that seemed easy enough to make, I bought a dozen 2oz bottles off Amazon (like these ones) and bought the ingredients to make my own. Not only do I get to track what’s going into our shots, but I modify based on what I liked. Now, I have it down to what we enjoy, though I measure from the heart typically so each batch is different. Some stronger than others, some sweeter.
A wellness shot is definitely not mandatory for healthy living. For us, it’s a great to kick start our day and add a splash of nutrients first thing in the morning. Naval oranges and lemons for vitamin C, ginger and turmeric for anti-inflammatory properties, carrots for beta-carotene, black pepper to activate the turmeric and coconut water for potassium and magnesium.
I typically get about a week of wellness shots when I make this. Keep in mind that’s for 2 people. If you are the only one drinking it, you should get about 2 weeks worth depending on how much you make. It will settle as time goes on, so be sure to give it a good shake before you drink it.
Special note: I will often make muffins from the left over pulp. The pulp is high in fiber from all that fruit and veggies and makes the best ginger, carrot, orange muffins. You can find that recipe here.
1. Ingredients
Ginger root
Fresh Turmeric
Pinch Black Pepper
3-4 Large Carrots
2-3 Naval oranges
2-3 Lemons
660ml Coconut Water
2. Instructions
1. Chop all the fruit and vegetables and place in blender. You can leave the peels on, just wash everything first. Personally, I rough peel the oranges and lemons (but I don’t love the zest from these fruits).
2. Add pinch of pepper and coconut water and blend.
3. Pour over sieve into a bowl. Be careful as this can stain- everything from hands, clothes, countertops. With a whisk mix the pulp until you have drained as much juice as possible. Put pulp aside if making muffins, or toss. You could also use a nutmilk bag and squeeze the juice out into a bowl. I suggest wearing gloves as this could stain your hands.
4. Fill juice into individual bottles or into jar and start to enjoy your shots each morning.
